Kristen Lavelett, Interim Director
Kristen Lavelett joined Local First Utah in July 2010. Kristen has lived in Salt Lake City for ten years, and desired to become a part of the Local First movement when she realized that all of the places she loved to eat, drink and shop at in the city were ornamented by the "Buy Local First" window cling. She began working with Local First on a volunteer basis, and has steadily increased her involvement and commitment to the organization where she now serves as Interim Director. As the Interim Director, she works on a statewide level to accomplish the educational mission of the Local First Utah and to enhance partner engagement in the movement as a whole. Kristen leads a small group at The Rock Church, loves to cook, travel and go to concerts.
Peter Bird, Community Liaison
Peter Bird joined Local First Utah in August 2013. Growing up, he lived all over the country, but eventually moved to Utah to study linguistics. Upon graduating, he and his wife immediately set off on a year-and-a-half-long adventure through Eastern Europe. During this time, he worked on community engagement projects for US embassies in Budapest, Hungary and Tallinn, Estonia, and studied comparative literature and cultural theory. These experiences in place-making were what first sparked his passion for local first movements, artisan economies, and human-scale urban design. Peter now lives car-free in Salt Lake City’s downtown neighborhood with his wife and emotional dog, where he enjoys gardening, playing guitar, reading, and crafting his own natural sodas. He also hopes to soon begin a master’s program in urban design.
Alex Adams, Photographer
While working for local restaurants Alex became a big supporter of Local First Utah and its mission to promote independent businesses. As a photographer, she specializes in weddings and portraits, which means she is lucky enough to photograph the essence of what makes life so great: having babies, getting married, overcoming obstacles, starting new careers, or watching families grow. To her, photos are more magical when people are in them. Since graduating from photography school in Montana, she has settled back in Salt Lake City where she is fortunate enough to shoot for amazing clients, as well as local businesses and non-profits whose missions and products she thinks are awesome.
